Adrian Beltre Has Grade 1 Quad Strain

In what will likely cause many of us to let out a collective sigh of relief, it appears that Adrian Beltre will, at least for the time being, avoid the disabled list.

According to most of the beat-writers on Twitter, Beltre's MRI results show a mild (Grade 1) strain to his left quad, which is much better news than was originally expected.

The Rangers will now take a few extra days to evaluate Beltre, and at that point, if he's still able to avoid the DL, will likely resume what I would assume to be DH duties until he's feeling at least a little better.

While the Rangers take that time, Colby Lewis will not make his expected start on Saturday against the Astros, instead being pushed back to possibly Monday or Tuesday, which would have him pitching against the Mariners in Arlington. Lewis does have an opt-out clause effective today on his minor league contract, but will not exercise it, as he has been assured by the organization that he will be added to the rotation.

So, for the weekend series against the Astros, we'll see Darvish, Scheppers, and Perez, followed by some combination of Lewis and Robbie Ross on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

At the very least, it appears the Rangers will dodge losing Beltre to significant time, and while it's never fun to have him miss games, if you had to pick a part of the schedule for it to happen, a home series against the Astros is as good a time as any.

While this news doesn't guarantee that Beltre will manage to avoid the DL altogether, it at least keeps the option open that after a few more days of rest and treatment, he'll be able to manage it and play through it. If there's any player on the Rangers' roster that can manage and play through a leg injury, it'd be Beltre, and while it's certainly not ideal, the Rangers are better with Beltre at 75% than having just about anyone else in the organization in his place.
