What's a Strike Zone?

Because whatever it is, I wish  someone could kindly explain it to the crew working this Rangers-Yankees series this week. For the record, pitch number one above wasn't a swinging strike. It was called, much to the surprize of every except for possibly home plate umpire Vic Carapazza and maybe Kerwin Danley, who is working 2nd base today.

It's been a frustrating series for things like this for the Rangers, and it's gone past the point of ridiculous into a territory I'm still not really comfortable delving into, and I'll just leave it at that.
